Our best friend, our family member, our beloved pet-- how do we say goodbye?

They have been through it all with us: breakups, heartaches, the good and the bad. They loved us unconditionally and kept our deepest secrets.

Now where do we turn for that source of comfort and love?

Losing our pet, and the ability to find a way to say goodbye, may be one of the most difficult times of our lives. Some people may not understand your grief; and even you yourself may not quite understand the stages of what you are feeling.

Just know that you are not alone. There are many different resources to receive support for the grief you are feeling.

Although grieving is handled differently by each person, here are the general stages you may go through:

• Shock, Denial, and Disbelief
• Anger
• Spiritual Bargaining
• Depression
• Acceptance and Recovery

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
