“The best executive is the one who has the sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done and self restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.”  -Teddy Roosevelt

This is the business advice that Dr. Cathi Smith of Oak Park Veterinary Clinic follows every day.  And working with her hospital and staff, it is clear that she has taken the advice and created a clinic that encompasses a wonderful group of dedicated, hard-working, and loyal employees.  Oak Park strives to offer comprehensive veterinary medicine tempered with common sense.  Dr. Smith states, “We tailor our protocols and prevention programs to the needs and safety of the individual pet; there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach.”  This is why Eden Memorial Pet Care is proud to showcase Oak Park Veterinary Clinic and has worked with them for 8 years.  Oak Park was our (Eden’s)  first veterinary client and I was so thankful for that.  They gave us a chance and I knew we had a lot to prove to them.   I remember sitting with Dr. Smith setting up her account while she was still under construction at the new location at 600 West Grand Avenue in Grover Beach.  Now 8 years later, we are still providing aftercare for their clients.

HISTORY:

Dr. Cathi Smith has been the sole owner/operator of Oak Park Veterinary Clinic for the past 17 years.  She received her Bachelors degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo (SLO)  in 1980 and her veterinary degree from UC Davis in 1984.  Upon graduation she worked as an associate in SLO (1984-1985) and Morro Bay (1985-1989).  From 1989-1995, she did relief work throughout SLO and Santa Barbara counties.  In 1995, Dr. Smith took over Oak Park practice from Dr. Don Lunt after his retirement.

STAFF:

Dr. Smith has a wonderful and caring staff, who are very dedicated,  as you can see by the years each of them has worked with Oak Park.  Deb Kinyon- Head Assistant and Inventory Manager–  has been with the practice for 17 years,  since 1995.  Deb Enriquez- Office Manager– joined the practice 13 years ago.   And Becky Hart (5 years) and Brian Cox (4 years) round out the current team.  According to Dr. Smith, “these are the people who make the practice fun and possible.”

WHAT MAKES OAK PARK VETERINARY CLINIC SO SPECIAL:

Dr. Smith states, “The friendliness of the people;the beautiful location, mild weather, and the small town atmosphere are what make living and practicing here on the Central Coast special”.  When it comes to the services  Oak Park Veterinary Clinic provide, they believe that a thorough history and comprehensive physical examination are still the foundation of an accurate diagnosis, and that is why they schedule 30 minute appointments for most patients.  Oak Park offers low-cost spay and neuter packages for kittens owned by our current clients to address the problem of cat over-population.  And they also enjoy a healthy referral relationship with other local veterinarians and specialists ; so that if they (Oak Park) can’t fix something, then they (Oak Park) refers the client and pet to someone who can.

GRATITUDE:

During the years of providing relief veterinary services, Dr. Smith met many excellent veterinarians and their exceptional staffs.  She is grateful for the enduring friendships and the wealth of knowledge obtained during those years.  But what Dr. Smith is most grateful for is the mentorship of some wonderful area veterinarians, most notably John Truax of Coast Veterinary Clinic, Ennis Ogorsolka of Cambria Animal Medical Center, and Dan Jones of Alliance Veterinary Clinic.  They shared their knowledge, support wisdom, and encouragement, and made the transition from new graduate to practice owner a reality.
